My particular medical  interests are respiratory disease and musculoskeletal problems. I have a knowledge of some complimentary medicine but only practice acupuncture in a very limited way for the treatment of a small number of mainly muscle pain problems. I have a lifelong interest in medical allergy and perform some simple allergy tests in the surgery.

My other interests are medical education and psychiatry of the elderly. I have been involved in the training of young GPs for over 10 years. I have a family of three and am married to Kim. We live in Dartington and are very involved in a building project and re-landscaping the garden. I enjoy exercise - usually running or cycling and am a keen on sailing, motoring and a bit of surfing."

Dr Alison Gelder

"I grew up in Lancashire and decided I wanted to be a doctor at a young age.  After leaving school I studied medicine at Nottingham University, where I qualified in 1992.  I went on to do a GP training rotation in Dorset and joined Leatside Surgery as a part time Partner in 1998.  I particularly enjoy working with young families, as I have three young children myself.  When I am not at work my family keeps me fully occupied and we can often be found out at the beach or on the moor with our dog, Suka."

Dr Ian Morris

Dr Ian Morris - MB BCh (Wales 1995), MRCGP

BASICS Doctor, Interest in Casualty Care especially, Asthma/COPD

"I was born in South Wales, where I also qualified.  Initially, I trained as a surgeon with a view to working in Casualty; but I soon realised that general practice was very similar so I became a GP.  I completed my training in the South West so that I could live and work with great people in lovely places like Totnes.

I am interested in training future GPs and am an Honorary Fellow of the Peninsula Medical School and an Academic Tutor.

I am the Club Doctor for Plymouth Albion RFC

I also work as medical commander and medical responder for West Country Ambulance as part of PLIMS - which is a charity funded from public donations;  as a doctor we`re unpaid, but we have the satisfaction of making a difference at serious accidents or major incidents for which we are on call for 24 hrs a day.

My interests are minor injuries, minor surgery, orthopaedic medicine, respiratory medicine and paediatrics.

I am married to another local doctor and have two small children. My hobbies include sailing, rugby, martial arts, tai ji, fishing and long walks with the dog."

I studied medicine at Southampton University and on graduating kept moving west until I arrived in Devon in 1992, and stayed. Having worked around Plymouth, Exeter and Newton Abbot, I joined Leatside in 2003 and feel very grateful to have ended up in this lovely Practice. ”

Dr Richard Hawker MBBS (London 2000)

Coronary heart disease, Diabetes

"Having been brought up on the outskirts of London, I did not progress much further afield with my medical school training at the Royal Free Hospital (North London). After that it seemed it was time for a new challenge. This lead to training for general practice in Devon - and I haven't looked back since!

This truly is a wonderful area to live and work in, and I feel very pleased to be part of such a lovely community.

Admittedly progress with the surfing is slow, but I am thoroughly enjoying the outdoors lifestyle offered by the sea and Dartmoor.

Specialist interests: coronary heart disease and palliative care. I am also keen on being involved with medical education."
