Health
screening
Over the years general
practice has changed and the services provided
have increased in variety. Although our
main function remains to provide help when
you fall ill many of our services are now
aimed at catching diseases in their earliest
and most treatable stages or preventing
them altogether. The services that we offer
to screen for diseases and promote good
health are as follows.
Health checks
If you wish you may request
a general health check. These checks are
available particularly at the time you register
as a patient with the Practice or for patients
who are 75 years or more old. Our nurses
also offer well-man and well-woman checks
for all patients. We recommend that you
have one of these checks every 3 years.
We can also give advice on weight loss,
exercise and healthy eating during routine
appointments or over the phone.
Cervical cytology
The Practice participates
in the NHS programme to screen women between
the ages of 25 and 64 for cervical cancer.
If you wish to take part in this programme
you will be invited every 3 years to make
an appointment at the Surgery for a cervical
smear. Both our Doctors and our Nurses can
undertake this procedure. Please contact
reception to make an appointment.
Breast screening
All women aged between
50 and 64 years will receive a written invitation
to be screened every three years. The first
screen is NOT automatically at age 50 years
but will be before your 53rd birthday. Women
over 65 are welcome to be screened but need
to ask the Practice to contact the screening
office directly. Please contact reception
in the first instance if you would like
us to arrange this.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm
screening
All male patients will
be invited to attend this programme in the
year of their 65th birthday. The purpose
of this programme is to find people who
have a weakness in one of the large vessels
of their abdomen. The screening takes place either
at Torbay Hospital in the Vascular Clinic or in the Surgery.
Child health surveillance
Child development checks
will be offered at intervals suggested in
local and national guidelines. Currently
these checks take place at 6 weeks and 8
months old with the Doctor and at 2 years
old with the Health Visitor. Dr Ingoldsby
undertakes these checks in a clinic on Thursday
mornings. Please contact reception to make
an appointment.

Pre-conceptual advice
If you are contemplating
getting pregnant please come and see the
doctor to discuss taking folic acid to significantly
reduce the risk of spina bifida. To have
its full effect folic acid must be taken
for three months before you conceive and
for the first three months of your pregnancy.
It is therefore essential to contact the
doctor in good time.
Smoking cessation
The Practice offers smoking
cessation advice to all patients on a one-to-one
basis. There are many products available
and all the help you need to help you kick
the habit. Please contact reception to make
an appointment with a nurse. |
